What is it and what can we do?

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become fragile and weak. There is a reduction in strength of bone leading to an increase in the risk fractures. This disease has been diagnosed in 40 million people. There is a 4:1 increase risk in females vs males. 1 in 2 over age 50 will have weak bones by 2020 unless they make lifestyle changes.

Risk Factors:

  • Medications Antacids
  • Age
  • Past History of Fracture
  • Low Body Weight
  • Smoking
  • Glucocorticoids
  • Sodium
  • Caffeine
  • Sedentary Life Style
  • Menopause
  • Dietary Recommendations

Deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus play a large role in the development of Osteoporosis. Many adults do not get the needed amount, which leads to the body taking it from bone to keep other systems in the body working. Bone is the largest storage of calcium in the body, however over years of breaking it down, the bones become brittle and weak. Sunlight’s reaction on the skin is the best way for the body to make Vitamin D, but unfortunately much of the geriatric population gets little to no sunlight.

Treatment and Prevention

  • Glucocorticoids are the most common secondary cause of Osteoporosis
    • Chiropractic treatment can help muscle pain and decrease steriod use
  • Calcium Supplementation is NOT enough
  • MCHC (Microcrystaline hydroxyapatite concentrate)
    • A highly absorbable form of Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and other trace minerals
  • Vitamin D3 supplementation!
    • 35 IU/pound of body weight / day
  • Decrease Salt and Animal Fat
  • Decrease Caffeine and Dark Soda
  • Mild Weight Bearing Exercises
    • Pilates or Zumba
  • Prevention:
    • Eliminate as many risk factors as you can
    • FALLS are a major risk factor in the geriatric population. With decrease bone density the falls are more likely to cause FRACTURES!
    • Fractures then lead to further risk of advanced osteoporosis and lowering life expentancy
