Choosing a Multi-Vitamin

Everyone should take a multiple vitamin-mineral (MVM) supplement.  One double-blind study of healthy volunteers published in Psychopharmacology2000;150:220–5, found that an MVM supplement significantly reduced anxiety and perceived stress levels, and possibly improved energy and the ability to concentrate.

Preliminary and double-blind trials have shown that women who use an MVM containing folic acid, beginning three months before becoming pregnant and continuing through the first three months of pregnancy, have a significantly lower risk of having babies with neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida) and other congenital defects.

In another double-blind trial, schoolchildren received a daily low-potency vitamin-mineral tablet containing only 50% of the USRDA for most essential vitamins and the minerals for three months. Dramatic gains in certain measures of IQ were observed in about 20% of the supplemented children. These gains may have been due to the correction of specific nutrient deficiencies (for example, iron) found in these children.

The primary purpose of an MVM supplement is to provide a convenient way to get a good variety of nutrients from a single product.  They are not meant to replace a healthy diet.  They only serve to enhance the nutritional quality of your diet.

Micronutrients that should be included in a complete MVM are vitamin A (or beta-carotene), vitamin B-complex (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and/or niacinamide, vitamin B6, folic acid (folate), vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, and biotin), vitamin C, vitamin D3, and vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol or mixed tocopherols), and the minerals calcium, magnesium, zinc, iodine, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum.

Phosphorus is another essential dietary mineral, but is so abundant in the diet that it does not need to be included in an MVM formula. The only exception is for elderly people, whose diets tend to be lower in phosphorus or have impaired digestion. Calcium interferes with phosphorus’ absorption, so older people who are taking a calcium supplement might benefit from taking additional phosphorus.

Both potassium and iron are efficiently recycled by the body. If potassium is included in an MVM, it usually has only trivial amounts. Most people get enough potassium from their diets if they include at least two servings per day of broccoli, bananas, sweet potatoes or avocados.  MVMs may contain iron, but these should be taken only by people who have been diagnosed as having, or being at high risk of iron deficiency, or who have a history of frequent iron deficiency.

Some nutrients may be beneficial at levels above what is possible to obtain from diet and an MVM alone. Nutrients that may be useful to most people in larger amounts include vitamin C, folic acid and B-12 (never take folic acid without B-12), magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin E, and calcium.

Many MVMs contain other usually insignificant amounts of flavonoids, choline, inositol, quercetin, herbs and various amino acids.  These are usually negligible amounts but are otherwise harmless.

What about “one-per-day” multiples?

One-per-day MVMs usually do not provide sufficient amounts of many nutrients such as vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C. One-per-day MVMs should therefore not be viewed as a way to “cover all bases” in the way that high-potency MVMs, requiring three or more pills per day, are viewed.

Because one-per-day formulas typically do not contain even the minimum recommended amounts of some of the nutrients listed here, multiples requiring several capsules or tablets per day are preferable. With two- to six-per-day multiples, intake should be spread out at two or three meals each day, instead of taking them all at one sitting. The amount of vitamins and minerals can be easily increased or decreased by taking more or fewer of the multiple.

Which is better—capsule or tablet?

Multiples are available as a powder or liquid inside a capsule or that you can mix with water or juice to drink, or as a tablet.  Occasionally the B vitamins react with the rest of the ingredients in the capsule or tablet. This reaction, which is sped up in the presence of moisture or heat, can cause the B vitamins to “bleed” through the tablet or capsule, discoloring it and also making the multiple smell. While the multiple is still safe and effective, the smell can be a deterrent and usually not very well tolerated. Liquid multiples in a capsule—or tablets or capsules that are kept dry and cool—do not have this problem. Capsules are usually not as large as tablets, and thus some people find capsules easier to swallow.

With liquids and powders that you drink, you need to be concerned about the “other ingredients” in the product.  See below for more details.

One concern people have with tablets is whether they will break down sufficiently to allow the nutrients to be absorbed. Properly made tablets will dissolve readily in the stomach.  To test your supplement, simply put the supplement into a glass of clear vinegar. This creates an acidic environment much like that of your stomach. Stir the solution occasionally. If the supplement disintegrates within 30 minutes, it should dissolve in your stomach, too.  If the supplement does not completely dissolve, choose another brand.

How To Quickly Tell If You’re Taking A Quality MVM

Look at the source of Vitamin D and Vitamin E.  The Vitamin D should be D3 or cholecalciferol.  It should not be the synthetic form D2 or ergocalciferol.  The Vitamin E should be d-alpha tocopherol or mixed tocopherol.  Mixed tocopherols are the best.  It should not be the synthetic form dl-alpha tocopherol.

Look at the “other ingredients” at the bottom of the label.  Are there artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin or sucralose?  Are there artificial colors or dyes such as FD&C blue #1 or yellow #6?  How about artificial preservatives?  If it contains any of these ingredients, put it back on the shelf.

Acceptable sweeteners are sucrose, fructose, stevia or xylitol.  Monitor yourself for a few days when you start to take a new MVM.  If you have stomach upset, it could be the sweetener being used.

When is the best time to take a multiple?

The best time to take vitamins or minerals is with meals. Multiples taken between meals sometimes cause stomach upset and may not be absorbed as well.

Do I Need More Than Just a Multiple Vitamin?

The Many Benefits of Silymarin

Silymarin is the active component of the herbal plant known as milk Thistle.  It has been used for centuries for various diseases to include liver disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, digestion, and has also been indicated in various illnesses of different organs such as prostate, lungs, CNS, kidneys, pancreas, and skin1. Silymarin can suppress inflammation of cells in the body similar to ways that exercise can help coordinate the response of stressors.  The results of the anti-inflammatory pathways that silymarin can signal leads to cellular repair and maintenance2. 

Properties of Silymarin include:

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Acts as an antioxidant reducing free radicals
  • Stimulating the production of new liver cells
  • Reduce the toxic effects of chemical exposures

Silymarin has been used to treat a range of disorders and is considered safe and well-tolerated. The most common use of silymarin is for the liver.  If the liver if functioning poorly, so is almost everything else in the body.

Hepatitis Studies

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver.  It can be temporary and resolve on its own or can become long term and progress to a disorder more severe or even cancer.  Symptoms of hepatitis also range from nothing at all to discoloration of the skin, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and more.

The results of clinical trial published in a study indicates that 82% of the patients with acute hepatitis who received 140mg of silymarin three times a day for at least 3 weeks showed improved levels of AST (SGOT) liver blood test.  The bilirubin blood test also improved in 40% of these patients3.  The conclusion of these trials indicated that therapy with silymarin reduces complications, reduces the duration of hospital stay and promotes recovery3.  In more advanced cases of liver inflammation where studies were done on patients who had a positive biopsy for cirrhosis, patients who took silymarin had improved survival rate after 4 years4.

In another study, patients with alcohol related liver disease were treated with silymarin at a dosage of 420 mg per day for 4 weeks.  At the end of the study, the liver blood test AST went down by 30.1% and ALT dropped by 40.8%5.  In the same study, the liver enzymes increased when patients that did not take the silymarin.

The anti-oxidant anti-inflammatory properties of Silymarin have been widely studied.  Use of silymarin can be beneficial to detoxify the liver, improve fatty liver caused by alcohol use, protect the liver from viruses and use of drugs or medications.

Diabetes and cholesterol

Excessive amounts of LDL Cholesterol can increase your risk of developing atherosclerosis, or plaque build-up in the arteries.  In a diseased state, inflammation occurs at a cellular level causing reactions that accelerate injury to the arterial wall increasing your risk for cardiovascular disease.  Foods known to accelerate this are7:

  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Soda
  • Fortified white flour
  • Caffeine
  • Corn, soy and safflower oil
  • Margarine and shortening
  • Hydrogenated fats

Milk thistle and its antioxidant properties from silymarin, has been a promising herb to show benefits on the cardiovascular system and reducing inflammation.  Researchers have shown that a milk thistle extract can prevent cholesterol oxidation by over 85 percent7.  Be sure to keep in mind that, along with taking beneficial antioxidants and vitamins, a healthy diet and exercise are all a part of preventing cardiovascular disease and other metabolic disorders.

Studies have been done to determine to the effects of silymarin on patients that have Type II Diabetes.  Silymarin is known to have antioxidant properties on the glycemic profile in diabetic patients.  One study found significant reductions in Hemoglobin A1C levels, fasting blood glucose, insulin, liver enzymes SGOT and SGPT, and LDL Cholesterol of patients with Type II Diabetes after taking silymarin at a dose of 200 mg three times a day.6

Protection against cancer

Along with other potent antioxidants like Vitamin E and Vitamin C, silymarin can help fight cellular damage and prevent against disease progression by increasing the functioning of the immune system.  Silymarin can help counteract the effects of chemical exposures, pollutants and heavy metals we are exposed to on a daily basis.  There is strong preclinical evidence for silymarin’s protective properties for the liver and anticarcinogenic effects, including inhibition of cancer cell growth in human prostate, skin, breast, and cervical cells.8

While much more research is needed in the field regarding silymarin benefits on patients with cancer, many laboratory studies that have already been done are promising.  One study showed that the effects of silymarin on breast cancer cells inhibits the cells’ growth and induces their death. The study concluded that silymarin might be “an effective adjuvant drug to produce a better preventive response for the cancer therapy9.”

Another published study done by the Univerisity of Colorado Cancer Center focused more on prostate cancer growth and metastasis.  Researchers found that the compounds derived from milk can restrict the tumors’ ability to grow new blood vessels they need for survival10.  Without the ability to grow new blood vessels, a tumor cannot grow.

There’s more to it than just milk thistle

Refined Carbohydrates

Why are refined carbohydrates bad for me?
When carbohydrates are refined, nearly all of the vitamins, minerals and fibers are removed, leaving only calories. Certain products like flour and sugars are refined and then “enriched” meaning that only certain nutrients removed in the refining process are added back into the product. In white flour, the kernel of the grain is processed to remove the germ portion. This removes about 33 nutrients. “Enriching” adds 4-6 nutrients back into the product. This creates the nutritive deficit. White flour is literally a sugar in itself, and where it is mixed with fats in processed foods, the fats are commonly hydrogenated and rancid, increasing your susceptibility to a number of disease processes.

White flour contains only 13% of the chromium, 9% of the manganese and 19% of the iron that is contained in whole wheat. Due to the fact that many of the B vitamins are concentrated in the outer parts of the grain, white flour is deficient in B vitamins. The germ of the wheat is a potent source of vitamin E.   White flour consumption results in a high potential for vitamin E deficiency in those whose diet is inadequate for vitamin E sources and/or comparatively high in bread-stuffs.

Potassium Bromate has long been used to increase the volume of bread and to produce bread with a fine crumb (the non-crust part of bread) structure.  Most bromate rapidly breaks down to form innocuous bromide.  However, bromate itself causes cancer in animals.  The tiny amounts of bromate that may remain in bread pose a small risk to consumers. Bromate is rarely used in California because a cancer warning is required on the label.  “In 1992 and again in 1998, the FDA found baked goods that had bromate at levels the agency considers unsafe,” said Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) attorney Darren Mitchell.  “But instead of banning the additive, as the UK and Canada have done, the FDA has tried—with only partial success—to get bakers to voluntarily stop using it.”  Buyer beware.

How do I determine if something is a refined carbohydrate??
To tell if a carbohydrate food product is refined, you can look at the ingredients label.  Ingredients are listed by weight, so the higher up on the list, the greater quantity of the ingredient. Refined carbohydrates are easily identified by such words at “enriched”, “wheat flour” [as opposed to “whole wheat flour”], “corn syrup”, “high fructose corn syrup”, “sugar”.  These products are typically high in calories and usually very low in nutrients.

“Unbleached, unbrominated wheat flour” can be a deceiver.  Although this ingredient has not been bleached or brominated as is the traditional “white flour”, it still has the germ removed from the wheat kernel leaving a less nutritive product.

The Carbohydrate – Cancer Link
A study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Mile Markers, and Prevention presents evidence of a link between the consumption of refined carbohydrates and cancer incidence. This controlled study looked at the dietary habits of over 1,800 women in Mexico, and it found that women who got 57% or more of their total energy intake from carbohydrates showed a 220% higher risk of breast cancer than women with more balanced diets.  The study found that foods with a high glycemic index actually accelerate the growth of tumors and cancerous cells in the body. Researchers involved with the study think that the seeming correlation between the consumption of refined carbohydrates and breast cancer could be related to elevated levels of insulin due to the fact that many breast cancer tumors are encouraged and supported by high levels of insulin in the body.  It actually promotes many forms of cancer, including colon cancer.

Unfortunately, many people still do not know that consuming refined carbohydrates is believed to contribute to the incidence of cancer, and thus they continue to drink soft drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup, they continue to eat breakfast cereals loaded with sugars, and they continue to eat large amounts of white flour in products such as breads, pastries, cookies, and crackers.

It is recommended that you should avoid processed carbohydrates as much as you can. At the same time, you also avoid chemical additives that are found in processed foods, especially artificial sweeteners and chemical taste enhancers, to avoid trading one bad for another.  The foods that you should be consuming to support outstanding human health are the same ones we’ve been talking about here for years, and those are natural foods found in nature, such as whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, and healthy oils.

Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease and Consumption of Refined Carbohydrates
Type 2 diabetes is indeed an epidemic of our time, affecting approximately 15 million individuals in the US alone, or almost 8% of the US population. Approximately 800,000 new cases were diagnosed in 2000, and worldwide, the number of people with diabetes is expected to rise from 135 million in 1995 to 300 million in 2025.  Many do not know they have it until they’ve been properly tested.

High intake of refined carbohydrates enhances the formation of VLDL cholesterol, or “bad cholesterol” and reduces levels of HDL, [ the “good cholesterol”].  Many metabolic studies have shown that high-carbohydrate diets increase levels of fasting triglycerides as well as increase fat deposits by facilitating the conversion of excess carbohydrates to fats.  High blood glucose and increased insulin output are associated with a high carbohydrate diet  can also lead to high blood pressure, as well as inflammatory responses that are predictive of increased cardiovascular disease risk and can also cause digestive disorders and general discomfort.

What’s the Deal with Turmeric

If you enjoy South Asian and Middle Easter cuisine, chances are you’ve come in contact with a spice called turmeric. It is one of the main ingredients in curry dishes and has a vibrant color and flavor1. One of the main reasons why turmeric has been linked to its main health and medical benefits is due to its active ingredient known as curcumin. A typical turmeric root may contain 2-7% concentration of curcumin1. There are over a million articles on the web and in journals supporting turmeric and its multiple pharmacological activities. Some examples of these benefits are listed below.

  • Anticarcinogenic
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Cardiovascular protectant
  • Helps support the liver
  • Supports the nervous system
  • Cancer prevention and treatment adjunct

Anti-carcinogenic Effects:

An anticarcinogen is defined as a substance that counteracts the effects of a carcinogen or inhibits the development of cancer2. Turmeric has demonstrated that it is capable of having an anti-carcinogenic effect on all steps of cancer development. Some studies are currently being conducted to prove that it may also play a part in cancer regression. The protective mechanism of turmeric is due to its direct antioxidant and free radical-scavenging effects. It helps jump start the body’s natural antioxidant system while simultaneously increasing levels of glutathione and other enzymatic processes of the body3. In various studies, turmeric has been reported to exhibit activity against the development of skin, breast, oral and stomach cancers. A study published by the Journal of Biological Chemistry found that Curcumin improves the effectiveness of chemotherapy in breast cancer patients3. Curcumin also promotes anti-angiogenesis, meaning it helps prevent the development of additional blood supply necessary for cancer cell growth.

Cardiovascular Effects:

The effect of turmeric and curcumin on the cardiovascular system includes the lowering of cholesterol levels and inhibiting platelet aggregation. A study was conducted on 10 healthy individuals who received 500mg of curcumin a day for 7 days. There was a 33% reduction of Lipid Peroxides, which contributes to a reduction of cell damage. There was a 29% increase in HDL cholesterol and 11.63% reduction in total serum cholesterol. This cholesterol lowering ability is due to turmeric interfering with the intestinal cholesterol uptake and by increasing cholesterol conversion into bile salts4.

Liver Support Effects:

A study was conducted on mice given aspirin and carbon tetrachloride (widely used as a cleaning fluid). The mice experienced a significantly reduction of the liver blood markers when treated with 100mg/kg of turmeric5. The antioxidant effect of turmeric supports its role in treating liver conditions, especially anti-inflammatory and chloretic effects (stimulating the secretion of gastric acid). This helps with increasing biliary excretion of bile salts, cholesterol and bilirubin6. Turmeric has also been noted to help increase the solubility of the bile, showing great benefit to the prevention and treatment of gallstones7.

Nervous System Support:

Multiple studies are currently underway demonstrating the effectiveness of turmeric on the nervous system. Some studies have indicated that a protective role of turmeric on stroke models, including links to the reduction of plaque buildup in models of Alzheimer’s disease8. It also has helped with the reduction of cataract formation on the lens by reducing the rate of cellular death and boosting resistance of the optic lens9-10.

Cancer prevention and Treatment Adjunct:

One human study was conducted on 16 chronic smokers and 6 nonsmokers. The nonsmokers served as a control group, while the 16 chronic smokers were given 1.5g of turmeric per day. At the end of a 30 day trail period, the smokers who had received the turmeric each day had a reduction of a mutagenic (radiation or a chemical substance) agent in their urine11. The results of the study are quite significant. With the rise of smoke and other environmental cancer causing agents, the frequent use of turmeric appears warranted11.

How much do you need?

The typical dosage for turmeric and curcumin depends on the type of condition being treated. The most common recommendation for turmeric as an anti-inflammatory aid is between 1000- 3000mg per day.  Turmeric’s active form curcumin may have difficulty being absorbed with its rapid metabolism and low bioavailability in the body. Some reports show that not all oral administered curcumin is 100% absorbed in the GI tract, in fact 40-85% may go completely unchanged. Some tips on how to help curcumin get in the body is to mix it with black pepper, fats and with quercetin (pigment found in plants and food such as red wine, red grapes, berries and onions12.)

The Irreplaceable Egg

Eggs have gotten quite a bad rap for their cholesterol containing properties and the link between cholesterol and atherosclerosis. However, much of their bad reputation is unfounded. Although a large egg does contain approximately 210g of cholesterol, we now know that changing the amount of dietary cholesterol consumption has only a minor effect on blood cholesterol concentrations in most people.

Our bodies synthesize cholesterol to the tune of about 1g/day.  About 2/3rd of this is cholesterol produced in the liver. The reason why dietary cholesterol does not impact our overall cholesterol levels as much as originally believed is due to our body’s ability to form high density lipoproteins (HDL). The HDL acts as a scavenger absorbing excess cholesterol. Several studies have found that eggs actually help to increase the number and size of HDL. It has been shown that when people ate three or more eggs per day their bodies made bigger LDL- and HDL-lipoprotein particles than when they ate no eggs. Initially, one would think this sounded like a negative thing; however, we now know the larger LDLs are less likely than small ones to enter artery walls and contribute their cholesterol load to artery-clogging plaque. Similarly, larger HDLs are more robust than smaller ones at scavenging cholesterol out of the bloodstream and, ultimately, out of the body.

Studies have shown that it is the especially small, dense LDLs that cause the greatest risk for atherosclerosis. Several recent studies have shown that people with diabetes or heart disease tend to package relatively more of their cholesterol in these tiny LDLs than do healthier people.

Furthermore, it has been found that a particular egg component called “lecithin”, interferes with the absorption of egg cholesterol and markedly lowers its uptake by the intestine. Even though a good amount of cholesterol is consumed when an egg is eaten, it has been found that much of the cholesterol becomes “unavailable for absorption” in the presence of phospholipids such as lecithin.

Nutrient density is the key reason why eggs are irreplaceable in the healthy diet.  When a food item provides more nutrients than calories to the diet, it deserves to be called “nutrient dense” and needs to be part of everyone’s diet.  While eggs provide only 1.3% of the average caloric intake, they are so nutrient dense that they contribute a great deal more nutrition than calories: 6% of the RDA for riboflavin, 5% of the folate, 4% of the vitamin E and vitamin A, and almost 4% of the protein.

Not only are eggs nutrient dense (which is a term we wish more Americans appreciated), but they are probably the most affordable and the highest quality source of protein anywhere. They have a biological value of 93.7%.  Biological value is the efficacy with which protein is used for growth. Fish is rated at 76% and beef is rated at 74.3%.  Eggs are most nutritious and easier to digest when eaten raw.

Eggs also include a range of B vitamins, calcium, zinc and iron which are needed for optimal muscle recovery and healing. Biotin is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin which is pervasive in many foods and also produced by intestinal bacteria. Biotin plays a key role not only in fat and amino acid metabolism but also serves as a co-enzyme for numerous metabolic reactions. In order to get all of these nutrients from the egg, you must eat the whole egg (the egg white and yolk).  Eating only the egg white eliminates the most nutrient dense part of the food (the yolk) and can actually contribute toward a biotin deficiency.

Controversial Raw Egg

In our research on salmonella, we see it as not much more than another opportunistic organism. When we use the term “opportunistic organism”, we imply that the organism tends to thrive in an already weakened host.  However, we are led to believe that any exposure to salmonella will lead to severe sickness and potential death.

Some humans have a “gastroenteritis” syndrome characterized by nausea and vomiting within 8-48 hours of ingesting Salmonella. This usually subsides quickly.  Shortly thereafter it can progress to where the individual may experience abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The individual may have moderate fevers (<39C) and occasional chills, too. These symptoms are a natural response of the human body trying to eliminate an aggressive invader…this is what it should do.  It’s a protective mechanism.  But why is the reaction different from person to person?  Why do some only have nausea and vomiting and others may be hospitalized?  The key difference is in the health of the body that is invaded.

More severe symptoms occur in higher risk groups of people. Those at higher risk of infection include:

  1. The young (up to 3 years of age) because their immune systems may be immature as is their bacterial flora in their gastrointestinal tract, both of which are protective. In addition, many young children today have been on multiple rounds of antibiotics for ear infections and the like which can be a reason for decreased good bacteria in the gut. Also, those of elderly status are more susceptible to infection because their immune systems are waning or declining. AKA: A weakened host
  2. Persons with decreased gastric acidity. Stomach acid is a first line of defense against ingested Salmonella. Those who have decreased gastric acidity may include those taking antacids, acid suppression drugs (e.g., H2 blockers), or those without stomachs due to cancer or ulcer surgery. AKA: a weakened host. This is why it is good to drink up to ½ cup of apple cider vinegar at the first sign of infection.  Drink as much as you can.  This little remedy has been show to provide immediate relief.  The reason it works is the vinegar increases the acidity of the GI tract which can kill some of the salmonella.
  3. Persons with altered gastrointestinal bacteria. Good intestinal bacteria is a protective mechanism to compete against Salmonella bacteria. This would include any age range taking broad spectrum antibiotics, purgatives, or those who have had bowel surgery.  Again: a weakened host
  4. Persons who are immunosuppressed or immunocompromised (HIV patients, those taking cytotoxic drugs such as cancer patients, those with rheumatoid arthritis, those with inflammatory bowel disease, those who have had transplants, those with bleeding disorders such as Sickle Cell patients, those with bone or joint disease, especially prostheses, those with anatomic cardiovascular disease).
  5. Persons taking drugs which cause constipation (having normal bowel movements is another protective mechanism to prevent the establishment of pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella in the host’s bowel).

We strongly feel if one strives to attain optimal health, eliminates foods and environmental exposures that tear the body down and cause nutrient deficiencies, and practices good hygiene, that salmonella would not be the danger it poses to most unhealthy Americans.

Health Department officials want you to think it’s the raw eggs fault or it’s salmonella’s fault when really it’s the individuals responsibility to do what it takes to keep a strong, healthy body…this is what prevents disease…not avoiding raw eggs. If you take a close look at these people and children who may react violently to salmonella exposure, you will see they already had an underlying health condition…AKA: a weakened host.

Know where your eggs come from…never eat an already cracked egg…and wash the egg before you crack it. Most importantly, smell it. If it smells, you shouldn’t eat it.  Isn’t it nice to know you do have control over your health?

Your Ferritin might be too high if…

What Is Ferritin?

Ferritin is a protein in the body that stores iron and releases it.  A simple blood test can determine this value for you.  When Ferritin builds up, iron overload is the result.  Over time, these excesses build up in major organs and if it is not removed, these organs can become diseased.  This can be a genetic trait, in which it is called Hemochromatosis.  However, this is the case only about 10% of patients with high Ferritin.  Elevated Ferritin is a lot more common for other reasons than you think and is to not be overlooked. Untreated hemochromatosis can be fatal.  More often though, the iron overload presents in patients with obesity, chronic inflammation, daily alcohol consumption, heart disease, liver disease, renal failure, joint pain, metabolic syndrome or diabetes, or even cancer.

Dr. Paul Adams of division of Gastroenterology University of Western Ontario, Canada says “it is important to remember that elevated ferritin does not equal iron overload and there are many patients with elevated ferritin caused by inflammation1.”

You’ve reached post menopause

Women may not experience symptoms of iron overload until after menopause.  Data shows that inverse changes occur between iron and estrogen levels in during menopausal transition2.  As estrogen levels decrease, iron levels will increase because it is no longer lost through menstruation and iron will then accumulate in the body.  Levels have been shown to double and even triple during this period3.  These increased Iron levels have been shown to increase risk of heart disease and breast cancer in postmenopausal women as well4.   Women, at the start of menopause, may experience fatigue, joint pain, and loss of libido.  Their doctor may underestimate these symptoms and just blame it on the menopause.  These could actually be signs that you have Hemochromatosis or iron overload.

You have elevated Liver enzymes

Because Ferritin is stored in liver cells, when there is liver damage for any cause Ferritin can be an indirect measurement of liver disease.   Studies have shown a correlation between elevated serum iron and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.  In fact, iron overload is present in about one-third of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease5.  Studies also show that Ferritin can be a alternate marker for the presence of Hepatitis B and C6.  Iron depletion therapy, such as with a phlebotomy discussed further below, may improve the metabolic complications and elevated liver enzymes in patients with fatty liver disease6.

You have Type 2 Diabetes

There are numerous studies that associate Iron overload and Type 2 diabetes.  This doesn’t mean that the high Ferritin value or Hemochromatosis is causing one to develop diabetes, but does indicate that it is a side effect and can accelerate inflammation and/or affect one’s ability to control the diabetes naturally. The iron can deposit in the pancreas and can cause a decrease in insulin production.  Data has shown that high ferritin approximately doubles the risk for metabolic syndrome after accounting for age, race, alcohol, and smoking7.

TIP: Insulin sensitivity can improve when Iron levels are lowered.  The findings in a study published by the American Diabetes Association suggests that bloodletting (therapeutic phlebotomy) might contribute as an adjuvant treatment in patients who have type 2 diabetes with increased ferritin concentrations7.  The effects of bloodletting in this study indicated that the changes in insulin sensitivity were maintained even 1 year after the procedure8.

You have abnormal heart rhythm

High iron has been suggested as a risk factor for heart attacks as well as patients with atrial fibrillation.  One study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that male participants who are considered regular blood donors have an 88% lower risk of a heart attack9.  For women under 55, those that have had irregular life-long menstrual cycles had a higher risk for a heart attack10.  Both studies indicate that regular blood loss, either from phlebotomy or menses, protects against heart attacks.

Treatment options for high iron levels

Make sure when considering treatment options for elevated iron levels, you understand the reasoning behind the cause.  You may be getting too much iron from taking it with supplements.  Be sure you read the labels of multiple vitamins you may be taking and any powder green drinks or protein powders as well.  And it could be as simple as reducing iron in the diet and/or go off the supplement.  There is a sweet spot for iron levels in the blood.  You can have too much and you can have too little.  When supplementing with iron, you may only have to take it for a short period of time to raise your levels to a desired state.  Be sure to check with a professional before starting on a supplementation protocol.

Blood letting or frequent phlebotomies are an easy fix to get rid of the excess stored iron in the blood.  There are some contraindications where eligibility may be declined such as:

  • Active cold or flu
  • Chemotherapy and some cancers
  • Low Hemoglobin levels (checked at site)
  • Underweight
  • Pregnancy
  • AIDS
  • Hepatitis
  • Deferment periods and other guidelines can be found at Red Cross.

Not only is it important to test your Ferritin levels, but there are many other markers in the blood that can be tested to determine why or what is causing these levels to be too high or low.  A comprehensive blood test and toxic element testing can be done by your experienced nutritionist to help guide you down the right path towards better health.  Symptoms of iron overload may mask other diseases and diagnoses and not all patients should be treated the exact same way.  If you are not getting better and have concerns about where your health is going, don’t wait.  Find out today what your individual needs are!

How you feel is no indication of how healthy you are…

We hear of people that ‘feel’ fine that are never sick and then they drop dead of a heart attack, have a stroke or maybe get a check up only to find they have cancer…sometimes advanced cancer.  I have heard of several people that felt a little bad, got checked out, found cancer and they were dead in a few short months. It is true that how you feel is no indication of healthy you are.

Many people get their annual physical that may include a blood test.  This annual blood test is done through regular doctors and paid for by insurance however, the list of tests has been getting shorter over the years.  In addition, the test ranges have changed over the years to correlate with population averages.  To illustrate this point: suppose a blood test has a range of 10-50.  A regular doctor will only see a problem with the test results is less than 10 or greater than 50.  Does this mean that you are healthy and have optimal health if the test result is an 11 or 49?  It just means that you aren’t bad enough to be officially diagnosed with a ‘disease’ and therefore warrant recommendation of a drug or other medical intervention.  Over the last 15 or so years there have been significant changes in these medical ranges for blood tests.  In some cases the results have been changed from 10-50 to 5-65.

These ranges are often based on population averages.  These new ranges correlate with over all poorer health in our country and the result is that now most disease has to be even more advanced before a condition is now medically diagnosed as determined by medical and insurance guidelines.  Regular doctors cannot diagnose or treat a condition before it is clinically documented because he has to justify treatment based on diagnostic testing. Waiting until a disease is advanced is like having a car problem and waiting until it won’t run anymore.  Catching problems early and avoiding problems and disease are the best ways to living a long, active and healthy life.  Truly, the oldest living people have avoided the serious and common diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer etc.  Don’t get sick and don’t be sick are important and long term drug use for chronic conditions is only a band-aid covering a smoldering progressive disease process. Drugs do not increase life span; at times they may delay or avert a premature death or “crisis”.  Blood pressure drugs are used so that you don’t have a heart attack or stroke today.  Antidepressants are used so that you aren’t depressed today.  Diabetes drugs are used so you don’t have high glucose and have a seizure today.  Drugs taken for chronic conditions and even for acute disease are to avert a disaster or problem today. However, the cause of the original condition is rarely considered and then there are the added side effects of the drugs. Life is in the blood and most health problems and diseases will show up in the blood long before symptoms are noticed…before you feel bad.  For instance, only 20% of liver function is needed to be relatively symptom free.  By the time symptoms of liver disease are noticed, it is often too late.  So, proper comprehensive testing must be done, including investigational testing to see metabolic problems, deficiencies, system functions, inflammations and infections.

Reading the blood test more closely is very beneficial for avoiding or catching a condition early.  Instead of waiting until a blood test is below 10 or above 50, some health experts, including our doctors at the Back to Health Center, will pick a middle range, maybe from 20-40, and this is then used as a guideline to monitor the optimal or healthy range.  Test results of 10-20 or 40-50 are those results that aren’t yet ‘disease’ but are warning signs of developing problems.  Treating these early warning signs are often much easier to resolve.  It is like putting out a fire when it is just beginning to smoke versus waiting until the problem is a raging fire.  Just about anyone can tell when there is raging forest fire or a problem that is causing a lot of damage with the need for expensive crises care, maybe hospitalization, drugs and prolonged recovery.

Crises care is what our current medical system is excellent at.  When conditions are ignored and diseases are not caught until they are advanced or you have a fall or bad auto accident then go to the emergency room.  Regular medical doctors are great at getting people out of a crisis but are not trained or are poorly trained on how to restore health, avoid disease and get off of drugs and use natural safe alternatives and remedies. The fortunate thing about modern health care is that there are natural alternatives that can make most drugs unnecessary.  Drugs aren’t bad.  If you have high blood pressure, you need to be on blood pressure drugs.  I would rather treat someone and deal with the effects of high blood pressure drugs than deal with the effects of a stroke or heart attack. We tell nearly all of our patients that we have the privilege to take care of, that our job isn’t to get them off of their drugs.

Our goal is to get our patient as healthy as they were before they needed the drug.  If you are 50 years old and have been on a drug, maybe a blood pressure drug, for 5 years, all we have to do is get you as healthy as you were 5 years ago before you needed the drug(s).  Something is different, why are you sick now?   This is why we do extensive testing of the blood, hair and other more extensive testing to seek out “why”.

A lady in her middle 50’s presented to our office a few weeks ago with persistent high blood pressure, hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms and insomnia.  She was taking Diovan for the high blood pressure and Tri-Est for the menopausal problems.  These drugs were not working.  The blood test showed mild anemia, mineral deficiencies and some mild inflammatory condition among some other minor findings.  A lot of little problems can have big effects.  We commonly do a hair test to check for toxic elements and she was extremely high in Arsenic, high in Lead and Aluminum.  We also did a toxic element DMSA chelation urinary challenge.  This test is used to detect those elements that are not easily eliminated or being eliminated in the hair.  She had very high levels of Mercury and high levels of Lead with this test.  These three very toxic heavy metals will cause hormonal problems and are known to cause high blood pressure.  Obviously, none of the drugs addressed the real cause of her problems.  As the level of toxicity increases in her body, her health problems will get worse too.  Now that the real cause of her health problems are known, a program will be developed to safely remove and eliminate these from her body.  Reducing exposure to these toxic elements is also important.  I am confident based on previous cases that as her toxicity is decreased that her blood pressure, hormonal problems and insomnia will resolve and in a few weeks she will no longer need the blood pressure drugs or hormone medication.

Comprehensive testing is key to identify serious and developing problems, develop natural therapy and vitamin recommendations and then testing or should be used to determine effectiveness of treatment. Taking vitamins without blood, hair and other objective testing is really just guessing.  The nice thing about natural care and taking vitamins is that guessing and taking vitamins generally won’t make a problem worse and the side effects of vitamins, minerals and most herbs is insignificant.  But there may be an underlying condition that is being missed, which is why at the Back To Health Center we usually have very good results treating patients with a wide range of conditions, including MS, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Chronic Fatigue, menopausal symptoms, diabetes, cancers and even some very rare conditions.

Regardless of the disease, the goal at our clinic, as it should be for all health care providers including medical doctors should be to restore health.  As health is restored, then symptoms and disease will improve and probably in time even disappear.

Migraine Headaches: Common Triggers and what to do in response

  • Migraine is one of the most common health conditions in the world—more prevalent than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined. A little less than 15 percent of the world’s population suffer with migraines
  • An observational study recently found that people who get migraines have a different blood vessel structure in their brains compared to those who do not get migraines, causing greater asymmetry in hemispheric cerebral blood flow
  • Environmental factors appear to play a significant role in triggering a migraine attack. This includes certain foods and drinks, hormonal changes, stress, external stimuli like scents or lights, dehydration and changes in sleep cycle
  • Both aspartame and MSG are notorious for causing headaches and triggering migraines. Aspartame can also trigger other neurological symptoms such as visual disturbances and tingling in the extremities
  • Preventing migraines begins by avoiding the triggers. Most often this means eating healthy whole foods (avoiding most processed ones) and managing your stress effectively.

 

Migraine headaches are one of the most common health conditions in the world—more prevalent than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined.1 Migraine headaches are also one of the top 20 causes of disability among adults.  I wonder how we could change the world if all of these people received proper testing (blood analysis), food allergy testing (if needed), chiropractic evaluation and even acupuncture treatments.  How many of them would get great symptomatic relief and truly get their lives back?

More than 37 million Americans suffer from migraines; nearly five million of them experiencing at least one migraine attack per month.2 All in all, an estimated 13 percent of the world’s population suffer with migraines to a greater or lesser degree.

This condition is more prevalent among women, with about 15-18 percent of women worldwide getting them, compared to six to seven percent of men. About 60 percent of women affected have menstrual-related migraines, meaning they tend to coincide with their cycle.

Despite its prevalence, migraines are still one of the most poorly understood medical disorders out there. Part of the problem has been that the experiences of those suffering from migraines vary greatly and the lack of specific diagnostic testing used in mainstream medicine to make a definitive diagnosis.

Aside from throbbing, searing pain, which may one-sided or distributed on both sides, some experience “auras” prior to onset, while others do not. There may also be nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, sweating, and/or sensitivity to light, sound, and smells.

Those who have never had a migraine before can be quite frightened by the neurological symptoms, which can simulate a stroke where one starts to have visual disturbances, even short term visual loss and/or seeing spots or wavy lines, and/or tingling in your arm or leg.  These findings can sound like many other neurological conditions and be difficult to sum up.

Hypothetical Explanations for Migraines Existence:

A meta-analysis of 29 genome-wide association studies recently identified five genetic regions linked to migraine onset and 12 genetic regions linked with migraine susceptibility.5,6  In addition to that, they also found a whopping 134 genetic regions that appear to heighten migraine susceptibility.  Yet even with this information, what can be done to combat this problem?

Another study published earlier this year suggests that the searing, throbbing pain that is the hallmark of a migraine may be due to overactive pain-signaling from sensory neurons in your brain.7

A third hypothesis is that a migraine arises as a result of a disorder of your nervous system, most likely in your brain stem.8 Although most regions of your brain do not register or transmit pain signals, a network of nerves called the trigeminal nerve system does. Pain is relayed through the trigeminal network to an area in your brain stem called the trigeminal nucleus.  If this hypothesis is correct, it also is a likely explanation for why migraine sufferers respond well to both neural input from a chiropractic manipulation and the overall energy balancing achieved through acupuncture.

From there, it is conveyed to the sensory cortex in your brain, which is involved in your awareness of pain and other senses. What first activates your trigeminal nerves, setting off your migraine, however, is still under debate, but some researchers believe that a wave release of neurotransmitters across your cortex can directly stimulate your trigeminal nerves, setting off the chain reaction that ends in the transmitting of pain signals. No singular hypothesis has emerged to explain the occurrence of migraine in ALL sufferers. Besides those already mentioned, other theories include:

  • Changes in the brain chemical serotonin. When levels drop, blood vessels including those in your brain become swollen and inflamed, which can lead to migraine pain.
  • A disruption of the subtle energies circulating throughout your body, along with unresolved emotional issues that manifest in your body as headaches.
  • Vitamin B deficiency. In one study, vitamin B6, B12, and folic acid supplements were found to produce a two-fold reduction in migraines over a six-month period.9 Previous studies, such as a 2004 study in the European Journal of Neurology , have also reported that high doses of B2 (riboflavin) can help prevent migraine attacks10

Are Food Allergies Causing Your Migraines?

Searching the medical literature in PubMed.gov using the search terms “migraine” and “food allergies” will provide you with nearly 160 different studies of this kind, so do yourself a favor and don’t dismiss this potential connection.11  I have encountered several dozen patients over the years who relay to me that their neurologist doesn’t see this as a valid connection.  This should give us all reason to pause with concern…

One randomized, double blind, cross-over study published in 2010 found that a six-week long diet restriction produced a statistically significant reduction in migraines in those diagnosed with migraine without aura.12 Some of the top migraine-inducing foods identified include: wheat and gluten, cow’s milk (yogurt and ice cream), sugar, yeast, corn, citrus fruits, eggs, aspartame, MSG and even grain based cereals.

How Can Diet Benefit Migraine Patients?

Quite a few people have reportedly rid themselves of migraines on the Paleo Diet (see Newsletter from March 2017), which can be summarized as “any food that can be eaten without being processed.”  That eliminates the following: grains, bread or pasta, and no pasteurized dairy.  Fresh fruits and vegetables, some nuts and oils along with wild caught fish, organic poultry and grass-fed lean meats are all allowed on a Paleo plan.

As always before setting out to correct an established medical issue it would be advised to seek out a qualified physician who utilizes third-party laboratory testing to identify the root cause(s) of any disease state. Commercial Meat

Hormones & Antibiotics

You will find these in meats (primarily beef, pork and chicken) and dairy products.  Most of your luncheon meats will contain these stimulants in addition to unfavorable preservatives such as sodium nitrite.

rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone also know as rBST or recombinant bovine somatotropin) has been approved since 1993 by the FDA because of data provided by Monsanto, the maker of rBGH.

rBGH is associated with increased risk of cancer, primarily breast and prostate.  Samuel Epstein, MD, Professor at the University of Illinois, to Dr. David Kessler of the FDA in Sept 1994 issue of Preventative Medicine Update writes…

“I am writing to express grave concerns about the risks of breast cancer from consumption of r BGH/IGF1 produced in milk.” rBGH causes insulin growth factor 1 (IGF1) when given to cows

IGF1 is a growth factor for human cancer cells, maintaining their malignancy, progression, and invasiveness.

“IGF-I reacts in a synergistic manner with estrogen, and plays a role in the growth and proliferation of ovarian cancer.”

Antibiotics result in a decreased immune system and resistant bacteria.

Those who had consumed diets higher in processed meats showed a greater risk of developing recurrent colorectal adenomas. Those with diets high in certain white meats, like chicken, were less prone to this risk.

Researchers have also found that eating processed meat 5 or more times per week increased a man’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by nearly 50%.

Spray-On Virus’

The FDA has approved a mix of six bacteria-killing viruses designed to be sprayed on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. Lunch meats are particularly vulnerable to Listeria because they are generally not cooked or reheated after purchase.

Consumers will not be informed as to whether their meat and poultry products have been treated with the spray.  To be honest, this policy provides meat vendors with more leeway to get away with poor quality control, poor hygiene and meat that’s too old because it takes away some of the bacteria.

If you haven’t been concerned about processed meats yet, here’s one more reason: At one point, the FDA had concerns this spray-on concoction might contain some toxic residue from the bacterial mix of sprays. The agency claims human contact with these residues in small quantities doesn’t cause health problems, but are you willing to bet they won’t?

We suggest you try to seek out a cleaner source for your protein needs.

25% of your diet needs to be from a protein source. Good protein sources are: Beans, seeds, nuts, sprouts, eggs, chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, ostrich, and bison. These need to be from a clean source that is labeled “organically grown”, “free range”, “no antibiotics”, “no hormones”, etc.

5 Things to Prevent you from Getting Sick this Winter

 

  • Vitamin C
    • Vitamin C is a nutrient your body uses for many critical functions including: maintaining your bones, muscles, and blood vessels, absorbing iron, and making sure you stay strong and healthy during the winter season. It helps to fight off free radicals that can damage your healthy cells. Vitamin C is naturally found in oranges and other citrus fruits, but it can also be taken orally.     • Elderberries are a great natural way to boost your immune system. They contain chemical compounds that are shown to boost your immune system naturally. Elderberries can be consumed in many ways including tea, juice, jams and jellies, lozenges, and syrup. The syrup is probably the most common and is Dr. Bennett’s go to for consuming Elderberry.
  • Chiropractic Adjustment
    • When you have a misalignment or subluxation in your spine it causes stress on your nervous system. This stress can lower your immune system which could lead to an increased chance of a cold or sickness. Our adjustments reduce and remove the stress on your nervous system which results in a strong immune system.
